SUMMARY

The Dakota Language and Culture Program Manager leads Dakota language and cultural initiatives that promote knowledge and learning. This position oversees cultural programming, staff development, and collaborative partnerships across all departments and with organizations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Serve as the primary point of contact for cultural presentations, including traditional openings, blessings, and other culturally appropriate practices.
  2. Schedule, plan and lead all Bison tours in coordination with staff to provide cultural content for use at the tours.
  3. Lead and oversee all Dakota language and cultural programs, events, and activities for the community including summer and winter culture camps.
  4. Develop and implement a strategic cultural programming plan aligned with community goals and priorities.
  5. Supervise, monitor timecards, and evaluate Dakota Language and Culture staff, ensuring effective teamwork and professional growth.
  6. Integrate Dakota teachings and values in lessons and curriculum for use by Tribal departments, schools, and community programs.
  7. Develop partnerships with local schools, museums, other Tribal nations, and cultural organizations to expand community engagement and visibility.
  8. Plan and deliver cultural events, camps, and workshops that encourage participation from all generations.
  9. Collaborate with the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) to create and offer ongoing cultural and historical education opportunities for staff and members.
  10. Prepare and manage budgets, ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with strategic objectives.
  11. Provide regular reports to Tribal Administration summarizing outcomes, participation, and future initiatives.
  12. Support educational programs by developing Dakota-informed curriculum and professional development for educators.
  13. Represent the Community at regional, state, and intertribal cultural events to strengthen partnerships and visibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in program supervision; or Bachelors degree in anthropology, education or related field.
  2. Experience supporting administrative functions, including planning, budgeting, and program coordination.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully across all levels of government in both written and verbal formats.
  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  5. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and contribute effectively to a team.
  6. Sensitive to Native American culture and committed to serving the Community.
  7. Must pass a drug screen (UA) and a criminal background check.
  8. Valid drivers license and proof of insurability.

PREFERRED

  1. Bilingual in Dakota and English.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: *

  1. Must be able to sit for long periods of time with occasional amounts of standing or walking
  2. Must have the ability to lift and carry up to25 pounds

REQUIRED TRAINING:

  1. Effectively Handling Harassment training
  2. Any position-related training as determined bysupervisor

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  1. Work is performed primarily in an office setting, but may include occasional outdoor activities
